Teenagers’ Cancer Experience and the Subjective Well-being
Abstract: The present study sought to establish the influence of major changes, such as the cancer survival and the influence of minor changes, such as changing the emotional mood, on the subjective well-being, and their interaction. Also, was tested the influence of cancer survival on the self-deceptive enhacement. The research involved 36 adolescents survivors of cancer and 38 adolescents who have no medical history of cancer. This quasi-experiment involved, in order: the measurement of self-deceptive enhancement, the manipulation of mood valence and measurement of the subjective well being of participants. The results indicate that the happiness and the self-deceptive enhancement of survivors do not differ from those of non-cancer participants. The mood affects the subjective well-being, only partially. However, when they receive positive stimuli, cancer survivors are happier than those who have no medical history of cancer. These results can be explained by psychosocial theories such as evolutionary theory, the adaptation theory (Brickman and Campbell, 1971), the theory of cognitive economy (Roth and Frisby, 1992), the dynamic equilibrium theory (Headey and Wearing, 1992).
