Stratagems in the construction of the Transnistrian identity

Abstract: This article intends to explain how the “Transnistrian identity” is constructed by transnistrian authorities through their official discourses and how this narration is perceived by the population of the left bank. We examined the main mechanisms and stratagems of the construction the “Transnistrian identity,” focusing on the the memories of the Transnistrian conflict and of the Soviet past, politics of celebration centred on the “heroic” years from the history of the Transnistrian republic, and the discourse of the federalization of the Republic of Moldova. Applied approach attempt to prove the fact that social frameworks of the past comprise the structure of the collective memory, and are materialized, modified and shaped by means of language. By applying the discursive analysis, we attempt to determine how language is used to engineer an array of versions of the past events and which are the interpretative repertoires, adopted explanatory and supporting pattern, that have been employed in the management and construction of the Transnistrian identity.

Rezumat: Prin acest articol încercãm sã explicãm modul în care „identitatea transnistrean㔠este construitã prin intermediul discursurilor oficiale şi cum e perceputã ea de cãtre populaţia de pe malul stâng al Nistrului. În aceastã ordine de idei, au fost examinate principalele mecanisme şi stratageme prin care este construitã identitatea, axându-ne în special pe analiza amintirilor despre conflictul armat, a politicilor de celebrare a istoriei republicii transnistrene şi a discursului de federalizare a Republicii Moldova. Demersul aplicativ vizeazã faptul cã reprezentãrile sociale ale trecutului constituie structuri ale memoriei colective şi se actualizeazã, se transformã, se construiesc prin intermediul limbajului. Aplicând analiza discursivã, am încercat sã stabilim cum este utilizat limbajul pentru a construi versiuni ale trecutului şi care sunt repertoriile interpretative, patternurile explicative şi justificative utilizate pentru organizarea şi reorganizarea memoriei conflictului transnistrean.

Résumé: Cet article a comme objectif comprendre comment une «identité transnistrienne» émerge à travers les discours officiels des autorités autoproclamées de la Transnistrie et comment cette narration officielle est perçue par la population de la région d’Est de Dniestr. On s’interroge sur les mécanismes et les stratagèmes de la construction de l’identité transnistrienne en se penchant sur les mémoires du conflit armé et du passé soviétique, sur les politiques de commémoration liées aux événements de la période «d’indépendance» de la Transnistrie et sur le discours de fédéralisation de la République de Moldavie. Dans cet article on prend en considération le fait que les représentations du passé sont des structures de la mémoire collective, qui s’actualisent, se transforment, se construisent par le langage. On s’’intéresse aux ressources et aux pratiques discursives utilisées dans le discours du management et de la construction de «l’identité transnistrienne» afin d’’en montrer comme le langage est utilisé pour construire une certaine version du passé en fonction des intérêts des groupes.
