Applying psychology to make railway transport safer and more secure

Railway transport has developed as one of the safest and most sustainable modes of transport for both passengers and freight. However, safety and security incidents persist as important issues with negative impacts on the quality of rail service and passenger satisfaction or perceived security. This talk will provide an overview of the current challenges for railway safety and security and will show that innovative psychological and human factors research can be successfully applied to tackle some of these challenges. Specific examples will be provided from different research projects funded by the European Commission in the FP7 and H2020 frameworks.
