Interculturality, Migration and Education

Coordinator: Assoc. Prof. PhD Simona Butnaru

Description of the Laboratory

The diversity is a common trait of the contemporary societies, given the coexistence of the historical groups and the establishment of new groups determined by migratory processes. During the last decades, there has been an increase of the movement of people in Europe due to the mobility of population inside of EU zone and to the influx of populations from non-EU countries, most of them from North Africa and Asia. Migration phenomena tend to overload education systems by requiring significant efforts of teachers, school counsellors and other professionals in education sciences to include and facilitate cultural and linguistic adaptation of diverse students.

The research activity within the Interculturality, migration and education laboratory responds to the needs to develop effective, empirically validated psycho-pedagogical strategies in order to explain and to manage complex and dynamic intercultural educational issues. Phenomena such as school dropout and social exclusion, discrimination and social inequalities are targeted.

The research approaches are focused on the following main directions:

  • exploring factors of the school adaptation of Romanian immigrant students to the school exigences in host countries, as well as to the requirements of the Romanian school in the situation of returning home (school results, school attendance, discipline, resilience, emotional state);
  • managing religious differences in the school context; possibilities and limits of inter-confesional approach in the religious education;
  • exploring the influence of perceptions about otherness on individual identity whithin the intercultural interactions in schools;
  • investigating communication, stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination in the context of intercultural relations between groups in school; the rights of minorities in the school context;
  • fostering interculturality and social inclusion through appropriated educational strategies.
